Introductions

The Geospatial Group at Applied Ecological Services provides state-of-the-art GIS services to our clients, both internally and externally. Our mission is simple: to provide the technical underpinning, increased understanding, and ethical solutions to minimize human impact on the Earth and provide support to AES's company goals and mission. Additionally, we work to restore the relationship between humanity and nature so that we are giving back more than we are withdrawing.

There are currently three Geospatial Analysts at AES:

Jason Carslon has been with AES for nearly a decade. As the Geospatial Technical Lead, he provides the long term focus and drives the development of innovative approaches to ecological problems. Jason has recently worked on a remote sensing project for Carbon Sequestration in the Great Plains. He's currently the primary technical advisor for AES's team working on the Illinois Natural Areas Inventory (INAI) Update and Category I Reassessment. Jason's interests in ecological restoration and preservation stem from his personal interests in the outdoors. Jason is a gifted fisherman and charter member of AES's Tuesday Night Fishing Club. He's also currently putting the finishing touches on a handbuilt log cabin in Michigan's Upper Peninsula (http://carlsoncconstruction.blogspot.com/).

David Aslesen joined AES in June 2009 to support the Illinois Natural Areas Inventory with database development and Quality Control. He has worked extensively managi
ng natural resources in the Upper Midwest, and utilizing GIS for natural resource applications. David has been instrumental in the development of our New Aerial Imagery Program bringing his years of photogrammetry experience. Prior to joining AES, he worked on the Land Condition Monitoring Program at Fort McCoy in Wisconsin. David is the newest member of our group and has become a great asset and team member. David is also video and multi-media enthusiast who enjoys media creation and working with audio/visual systems as a volunteer. He also enjoys skiing, hiking and conoeing.

I came to AES in late March 2008. I was hired to work with Jason on the INAI Project. Over my two year's here, I've worked on numerous natural resource inventories and provided GIS support for many other projects as well. I've also been intimately involved in adopting and implementing new technological approaches and tools at AES. I've worked closely with our IT Department to integrate field based data collection methods and remote server work groups to improve our work flow efficiency. I've also made a personal effort to cut back on paper use by transitioning to an all digital work environment. Prior to my tenure here at AES, I wrote an Urban Forest Management Plan for the City of Ann Arbor Michigan. I also had the great opportunity work for Casey Trees in Washington, DC to assess the District's urban forest health (that's the green roof they installed on their former building on K Street, NW behind me). I'm also an avid hiker and backpacker. I'm currently planning a second trip to the Olympic Peninsula in Washington, and last year I completed my first technical summit of a 14,000 foot mountain in Colorado.

We're all very excited about sharing our work with our co-workers, current, former, and NEW clients, friends, neighbors, and family. Keep checking back with us here for updates on all of our exciting projects and great geospatial adventures.
